An HDD stores data on spinning magnetic platters, while an SSD uses flash memory with no moving parts. SSDs are much faster for booting and loading files, while HDDs deliver far more capacity per dollar. Many systems combine an SSD for speed with an HDD for high-capacity storage and backups. 

HDDs are used to store and access data of all kinds, operating systems, programs, documents, photos, videos, and games, as well as backups and archives. Thanks to their large capacities and low cost per terabyte, they're ideal for bulk storage in PCs, gaming consoles, NAS systems, surveillance recorders, and data centers. 

A typical hard drive is a rectangular metal box, built in a 3.5-inch form factor for desktops and servers, or a 2.5-inch form factor for laptops and portable drives. Inside are stacked spinning platters and read/write heads, sealed within the casing. On one edge are the SATA or SAS data and power connectors. 

An SSD loads games and levels faster, so it's the better choice for titles you play actively. An HDD is slower but offers far more capacity per dollar, making it ideal for storing a large game library. Many gamers use an SSD for current games and an HDD, like a WD Black drive, for the rest. 

Typically a hard drive lasts around three to five years, though many run reliably much longer. Lifespan depends on usage, workload, heat, and handling. Drives rated for 24/7 operation, such as NAS and enterprise models, are built to endure heavier, continuous use. Regular backups are the best protection regardless of drive age. 

A SATA (Serial ATA) hard drive uses the standard interface that connects drives to a computer or server at up to 6Gb/s. It's the most common and cost-effective HDD connection, used in desktops, laptops, NAS, and many data-center drives. SATA uses a single data path, unlike the dual-port SAS enterprise interface. 

Formatting prepares a drive for use by setting up a file system (such as NTFS, exFAT, or APFS) and a structure for storing files. It also erases existing data, so it's commonly used to wipe a drive or change its file system. Quick formats reset the file table, while full formats also scan the drive for errors. 

CMR (Conventional Magnetic Recording) writes data tracks side by side for consistent write performance, making it the choice for NAS, RAID, and write-heavy workloads. SMR (Shingled Magnetic Recording) overlaps tracks to add capacity, but can slow under sustained writes. CMR suits active and RAID use; SMR fits archival or light, read-mostly storage. 

A SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) hard drive is an enterprise drive with dual data ports, faster 12Gb/s speeds, and support for large numbers of drives. SATA, by contrast, uses a single 6Gb/s path and is more cost-effective. SAS suits servers and high-availability storage; SATA suits desktops and capacity-focused systems. 

Each is tuned for its workload. Desktop drives (WD Blue) suit everyday single-user PCs; NAS drives (WD Red Plus/Pro) are built for 24/7 multi-drive RAID; surveillance drives (WD Purple/Purple Pro) handle continuous recording from many cameras; and enterprise drives (WD Gold, Ultrastar) are designed for heavy, always-on data-center workloads with the highest reliability. 

Partitioning splits one drive into separate volumes so you can organize data by purpose, isolate the operating system from files, host multiple systems, or apply different permissions, backup, and snapshot policies. In servers, NAS, and workstations, this can improves data management, security, and maintenance. It's distinct from RAID, which spreads data across multiple drives for redundancy. 

RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) combines multiple drives into one array for redundancy, performance, or both, so the array can survive a drive failure. Use CMR drives rated for 24/7 RAID operation: WD Red Plus or Red Pro for NAS, and WD Gold or Ultrastar for enterprise and data-center arrays. Avoid SMR drives in RAID. 

Businesses choose HDDs when capacity and cost matter more than raw speed, for backups, archives, surveillance, cold storage, and large-scale cloud or AI data. HDDs deliver far more capacity per dollar and per watt than SSDs. SSDs are reserved for hot, latency-sensitive workloads, so many data centers tier both: SSDs for speed, HDDs for capacity.
