An external SSD uses flash memory for faster transfers and better shock resistance, making it ideal for working files and travel. An external HDD costs less per terabyte and offers higher capacities, making it better for backups and large media libraries. Many people use an SSD for active work and an HDD for bulk storage.

Typically, focus on capacity, interface speed, and form factor. Match capacity to what you'll store, look for a modern USB-C or USB 3.2 connection for faster transfers, and pick portable (bus-powered) for travel or desktop (with a power adapter) for higher capacity. Consider extras like hardware encryption, backup software, and ruggedness if you travel often.

Portable hard drives commonly range from 1TB up to about 6TB, with capacities continuing to grow. A 1-2TB drive suits documents, photos, and everyday backups, while 4-6TB models can hold large video libraries and full system backups. Choose based on what you store today plus room to grow.

The best external hard drive depends on your needs. For everyday portability and backups, WD My Passport offers several terabytes in a compact, bus-powered design. For maximum capacity at your desk, WD My Book provides higher storage with its own power supply. Creative professionals who need ruggedness may prefer G-DRIVE models.

For travel, prioritize a compact, bus-powered drive that's durable and easy to carry. The WD My Passport is a popular slim option with built-in 256-bit AES hardware encryption and password protection, while the G-DRIVE ArmorATD adds a rugged, all-terrain design rated IP54 for rain and dust with crush resistance up to 1,000 lbs. Both run over USB without a separate power supply.

For Mac, choose a drive that's Time Machine compatible and connects over USB-C. WD My Passport for Mac ships preformatted for macOS, and the rugged G-DRIVE ArmorATD also arrives Mac-ready with both USB-C and USB-A cables. Any external HDD can work with a Mac once reformatted to a Mac-compatible file system.

For gaming, look for a fast USB 3.2 connection and ample capacity to hold large game libraries. The WD Black family of game drives is built for this, with high capacities designed to expand console and PC storage. An external HDD is great for storing many titles, while an external SSD delivers faster load times on PC and for backward-compatible PS4 games on console.

Yes. A portable hard drive can typically work with both Mac and PC, but the file system determines out-of-box compatibility. Drives often ship formatted for one platform, so you may need to reformat. To use one drive seamlessly on both, format it as exFAT, which both macOS and Windows can read and write.

exFAT is the file system that works natively on both macOS and Windows, letting you read and write files on either platform without reformatting. NTFS is read-only on a Mac by default, and macOS-native APFS/HFS+ aren't readable on Windows. For cross-platform use, format the drive as exFAT.

In business and field work, portable hard drives provide on-the-go storage for backups, file transfers, and offloading data from cameras or laptops. Their compact, bus-powered design suits travel, client sites, and remote shoots. Rugged models like the G-DRIVE ArmorATD add shock and weather resistance for demanding field conditions.

Not directly. You can store and play PS4 games directly from a USB external drive, but PS5 games can only be stored on it to free up space. To actually play PS5 games, you must copy them back to the console's internal Ultra-High-Speed SSD. A SuperSpeed USB (5Gbps or faster) drive is required.

If your external drive doesn't appear, first try a different USB port or cable, since faulty connections are the most common cause. Check whether the drive shows up in Windows Disk Management or macOS Disk Utility, where you can manually mount the drive or fix partition issues. A drive formatted for another OS may also need reformatting.

Hard drive encryption scrambles the data on a drive so it can only be accessed with the correct password or key. If a drive is lost or stolen, encryption can keep sensitive business information unreadable to unauthorized users. WD portable drives such as My Passport include hardware AES-256 encryption with password protection via WD Security software.

Shucking means removing the internal HDD from an external enclosure to use it as a bare internal drive, usually to save money. While popular with hobbyists, it typically voids the warranty and may give you a drive not rated for your intended workload. For business or NAS use, buy the appropriate internal or enterprise drive instead.

The WD My Passport is a slim, everyday portable HDD for backups and general use, with built-in encryption. The G-DRIVE ArmorATD is a rugged, creative-pro drive in an aluminum-and-rubber case, rated IP54 and crush-resistant to 1,000 lbs, with USB-C and macOS formatting out of the box. Choose My Passport for portability, ArmorATD for durability.

RAID levels, sometimes called RAID types, each balance speed, protection, and usable capacity differently, and in everyday storage, four common options are RAID 0, 1, 5, and 10. RAID 0 stripes data for maximum speed but provides no redundancy; RAID 1 mirrors data across two or more drives, so a full copy of your data can survive if one fails; RAID 5 spreads data and parity across three or more drives for a balance of capacity, performance, and redundancy; and RAID 10 combines mirroring and striping for speed plus redundancy. Most NAS and DAS systems let you pick the level that fits your bay count and priorities.

No, RAID and backup solve different problems. RAID helps protect against a drive failing by keeping the system online, but it won't recover files lost to accidental deletion, ransomware, corruption, or theft of the whole unit. A RAID system gives you uptime and redundancy; a separate backup, ideally kept offsite or in the cloud, gives you a recoverable copy if data is lost. Serious setups use both.

The number of drives depends on the RAID level: RAID 0 and RAID 1 each need at least two drives, RAID 5 needs at least three, and RAID 10 typically needs at least four. That's why bay count matters when picking a system-a 2-bay unit can support RAID 0 or 1, while 4-bay and larger enclosures can support RAID 5 and RAID 10, depending on the model. Systems on this page range from 2-bay units up to large multi-bay enclosures.

The right RAID level is the one that fits your goal. For simple two-drive redundancy, RAID 1 is a common choice; for a balance of usable capacity and protection against drive failure across several drives, RAID 5 is a popular choice; for high performance with redundancy in demanding workloads, RAID 10 is a strong choice; and RAID 0 suits temporary, speed-first tasks where the data is backed up elsewhere. Match the level to your bay count and whether you value protection or performance most.

A RAID enclosure is a housing that holds multiple drives and runs them as a single RAID system, connecting to a computer or network depending on the model. It's what coordinates the drives, manages the RAID level, and turns several drives into one logical storage volume, which can deliver the performance and uptime that professional workloads depend on. Depending on the RAID level, it can also add redundancy and protection against drive failure.

RAID and NAS work together rather than compete. RAID is a method of combining drives for protection or performance, while NAS is a type of system that makes storage available over a network. Put simply, RAID is the technology inside, and a NAS is one kind of system that can use it-alongside DAS units, which connect directly to a single computer. Many multi-bay NAS and DAS systems support RAID internally.
