NVMe — or non-volatile memory express — is a storage and transport protocol for solid state drives. NVMe SSDs deliver higher performance and lower latency than previous protocols, making them ideal for compute-intensive applications such as professional creative work, PC and console gaming, and enterprise data center environments.
NVMe was developed to support the higher demands of NAND flash storage and increased bandwidth of the PCIe® interface.
Early PCIe SSDs often used proprietary firmware that could limit scalability. NVMe emerged as a standardized and highly scalable storage protocol to address those issues.
NVMe boasts transfer speeds up to 1000MB/s per lane. Its speeds — on top of its high bandwidth, low latency, and overall superior performance — make it ideal for demanding use cases, like heavy-duty personal workflows, PC and console gaming, and enterprise storage environments like the data center and edge storage.
NVMe SSDs make use of parallel, low-latency data paths. This means they can handle demanding workloads with a smaller infrastructure footprint compared to SAS and SATA SSDs.
This kind of low latency is important wherever NVMe is used, but it’s especially critical in data center environments. By using fewer storage devices and CPU cycles to achieve the same result, enterprises maximize their return on storage infrastructure, leading to a reduction in space and power consumption.
NVMe and SATA are both storage and transport protocols for SSDs. NVMe drives are faster, boasting bandwidth speeds up to 1000MB/s per lane compared to SATA’s 600MB/s single lane. NVMe drives also support multiple command queues (up to 64K), further helping to maximize speed and minimize latency.
PCIe (peripheral component interconnect express) is the interface standard that NVMe is built on. PCIe slots may be used for graphics cards, SSDs, or HDDs.
PCIe slots come in several sizes — such as PCIe x1, x4, x8, and x16 — that reflect the number of lanes available for data transfer. NVMe’s ability to take advantage of multiple lanes helps drive its fast transfer speeds.
Most NVMe drives come in one of two form factors:
M.2: the most common form factor for many consuer SSDs. M.2 2280 SSDs are popular in PCs and gaming consoles like PlayStation. M.2 2230 SSDs are popular in handheld gaming devices.
2.5": also known as U2 and U.3 drives, or Small Form Factor (SFF) drives. They're commonly used in enterprise systems because their larger size can accommodate more memory and one to two ports.
