David Newton
Professional photographer, filmmaker, photo tutor and all-round photo geek, Dave Newton has been taking pictures for more years than he is willing to admit. A simple love for the art of capturing beautiful scenes, Dave doesn’t limit himself to just one subject or genre and prefers to photograph anything that catches his eye. He is most known for travel, landscape and wildlife, but really anything goes depending on the day of the week, including abstract fine art!
His video work is more corporate than out in the wilds, but he has been involved in broadcast documentaries as well. He is global ambassador for SanDisk, Eizo, Manfrotto, LitePanels, Lastolite and Koy Lab, and he travels extensively capturing images all-around the word for a wide range of clients. Her also leads photo workshops, most notably safaris in Africa and Whale Watching in Mexico, as well as UK based workshops in the Lake District and Scotland.
Whether it’s a memory card in a DSLR of Cinema camera, backing up
on location to a portable SSD, or accessing my archive from anywhere
in the world SanDisk, G-Technology and WD provide the technology
to allow me to get on with working, safe in the
knowledge that my images are safe, secure and accessible.

Behind the Scenes with David Newton
Variety. My work is so diverse that for me it is about using light, whether it is natural light I’m responding to, or artificial light I’m adding in, to tell a story.
The natural world mostly. Things catch my eye all the time. I can’t pin down one influence, though years back I worked for Stephen Dalton, a phenomenal wildlife photographer and the father of high speed wildlife photography. His technical approach to image capture has had a subconscious, but lasting, impact on me.
I’m a Canon fan, so a whole range of cameras from EOS 5DsR and mirrorless like the EOS R to M6 Mark II, Cinema C500 Mark II, C200 etc. It depends on the shoot. In terms of lenses, that’s driven by the story I’m trying to tell - I like to make sure I have some environmental images with the subject in their habitat, so that can be wider lenses, but for distant subjects, in Africa I love the EF400mm f/2.8L IS USM and for working from a small boat in Mexico with whales I prefer the versatility and light weight of the EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L II IS USM.
I’m very much a shoot on the move style of photographer. That doesn’t mean I don’t setup and wait sometimes, but more often than not I’m responding to situations rather than planning them out.
How long is a piece of string?! It is so subject dependent and there is no Holy Grail of a perfect image. I’m always striving for better, spotting flaws in images I’ve taken and trying to do better next time. It means that while I have keepers, I keep shooting and refining!
