She Invents

She Invents is an internal program launched to combat the underrepresentation of women in STEM and patenting. She Invents offers resources, guides, mentorships, and profiles of female technical staff to support women and underrepresented inventors.

Inspiration and Guidance

When Sabra-Anne Truesdale, associate general counsel on Western Digital's Patent team, read a report showing that women make up 20 percent of the technical workforce but less than 10 percent of inventors, she was driven to action. Together with her manager, she spearheaded the creation of She Invents in 2020 to address the underrepresentation of women in STEM, especially when it comes to patenting.

The program connects female employees to mentors for coaching and guidance and encourages them to submit an invention disclosure to Western Digital's legal department. Chaitra Srinivasan has served as mentor for and submitted disclosures through the program. "It made me realize that all you need is an idea," Chaitra said. "Any simple idea, any improvement can be filed for disclosure."

Through She Invents and other efforts, female participation in Western Digital's patent program increased 88% from FY20 to FY22.

Employee Resource Groups

Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) serve as a platform for employees to build relationships and connections, foster a sense of belonging, and develop ways to support our business. Our seven employee networks span 20 global chapters with groups in India, China, Israel, Thailand, Malaysia, and the Philippines.

All Western Digital ERGs are open to any employee interested in joining.
