Kirill Umrikhin
Hi, I’m Kirill Umrikhin, a professional photographer from Russia. I’m 31 years old. I mostly shoot action sports, outdoor and travel, different cultural/music/etc. events and also specialize in drone photography and videography in hard conditions. I started with analog photography, went through the press crisis, embraced Instagram, and now I am focusing on directing TV documentaries. But I’m still a photographer. I believe that the most important thing is to tell stories, because stories make us dream and cry… and sell products if needed.
I’m a Nikon, Boardriders, and Manfrotto ambassador as well as a member of SanDisk Extreme Team. Moreover, I’m a Boardriders (Quicksilver, Roxy, DC, Billabong and Element) team manager in Russia and I look after an amazing team of athletes in such sports as snowboarding, skating, wakeboarding, surfing, windsurfing and moto sport.
I’m from Krasnogorsk, a city on the outskirts of Moscow. I got hooked on photography at school and I was also interested in graphics, architecture and design. I graduated from the Institute of Journalism and Literature Art where I studied at the photo journalism department. My professional career started in 2004 when I got a job at Onboard Snowboarding Mag. Since then my photos were published in different sports, glamour and news mags in Russia, Europe, USA, Canada, India, and Japan.
My clients are Boardriders (Quicksilver, Roxy, DC, Billabong, Element), Apple, Austria Board of Tourism, adidas, Beeline, Chanel, Kona, Megafon, Nike, Nissan, Nokia, RedBull, Toyota, PepsiCo, Vans, Visit Norway, Traektoria Boardshop, Sport-Master, Kant, and others.
Since 2013, I give lectures and conduct workshops in sport and travel photography.
In sports and action photography you often cannot repeat the moment
so I need to be sure that my pictures will be safely copied
to my SanDisk Extreme Pro cards
in the camera and later safely saved on the drives.
Everything should work in extreme conditions, no matter
if it’s on a shaking yacht or in a frozen hut in the mountains.

Behind the Scenes with Kirill Umrikhin
Action sports, outdoor photography, drone photo and video, as well as filming in difficult conditions like sailing, mountains, ocean etc.
The moment and the angle. Everything around us has many angles but only one will be the best. My work is to find this angle in a right moment.
Always take your camera with you. It doesn’t matter which camera you have, the main thing is not to leave it in the hotel room.
I don’t know yet. I try to combine National Geographic’s image style with action sports and also show crazy things that athletes do with beautiful landscape around.
In some projects it could be more than a year of preparation. Some pics are just a combination of factors like a good place and a right moment. You have to plan your work and be open minded for new adventures.
