HackWatchR is one of the largest protectors of Web sites in the world, shielding tens of thousands of sites from hacker intrusions that could potentially put consumer identity and credit data at risk. Savvy e-tailers know that securing customers’ trust by keeping credit card information safe and ensuring transactions are protected from fraud is fundamental to the success of all Web-based businesses. HackWatchR assists merchants in keeping security levels high, continually scanning incoming contacts for malicious intent. This 24x7 service relies on a flexible system that can interact with a variety of hardware configurations and meet the needs of each distinct customer.
In planning how to maintain their technological leadership in the burgeoning e-commerce world, HackWatchR focused on an environmentally-friendly strategy that would minimize energy costs while maintaining scalability for future expansion. While looking at half-depth back-to-back mounted servers to maximize density at the data center, and more efficient and more reliable DC power, the amount of available power dedicated to storage was capped at 25,000 W/year. Starting with that one fixed variable, HackWatchR VP Technology was able to crunch some revealing numbers on storage capacity vs. power consumption.
For the identical power, four hard drives were identified that could be arrayed to provide over 2,000 TB total capacity. Three of these drives were 1 TB capacity, but one 750 GB drive clearly outperformed two of the 1 TB units, making the top two choices both GreenPower™ drives by Western Digital. The numbers showed that an array of WD 750 GB WD RE2-GP drives provided 24% more capacity than the competitor 1 TB drive for a 23% greater investment. While impressive, in the end HackWatchR chose the 750 GB drive’s larger companion for the added capacity, the 1 TB WD RE2-GP drive with 40% extra storage than the low-price leader. Proving it pays to shop around, whichever side of the counter you’re on.
