With high oil prices illustrating the fundamental scarcity of hydrocarbon fuels, the search for new discoveries is more intense than ever before. The search is also smarter than ever, thanks to revolutionary new exploratory processes generating a flood of new data. The pressing issue for Dynamic was determining how it could handle more data, more effectively and more efficiently.
At the time,  Dynamic was quickly approaching the limits of its available processing and storage capacity but had already exceeded their data center’s grid-based power supply, so it was forced to utilize a trailer-mounted generator to meet the demand. An added frustration was that a large portion of the grid-based power wasn’t even available for processing, with as much as 40% required for HVAC just to keep the system operational. Management directed the IT department to fix it all – to cut overall power consumption, eliminate the mobile power requirement, enable more processing power, and maximize storage to handle the expanding flow of data – with the investment for storage fixed at $1 million.
Within this budget, Dynamic realized that WD’s GreenPower hard drives would not only reduce power use significantly, it would also let them deploy more drives further increasing data storage capacity. Seen side-by-side with an array of a competitor’s 1000 GB drives, (Requiring 42,345 W/year) their ultimate choice of an array of WD GreenPower 1000 GB WD RE2-GP drives, (Using only 30,778 W/year) gained 18% greater storage at 73% of the power cost. Combined with new half-depth servers offering greater serviceability and more processing density, with cabinet-based DC power which reduces both heat and server energy use, these cooler-running drives also contribute to improved thermal management. All together, it’s a smart and responsible solution that allows Dynamic to husband precious resources while searching for new supplies.
